The Rothschild Archive London

The Archive is administered by The Rothschild Archive Trust. The Archive collections reflect the activities of the Rothschild businesses together with the family's private interests. We welcome researchers from all over the globe.

The Rothschild Archive Trust

The Rothschild Archive was established in 1978 by Victor, 3rd Lord Rothschild. In 1999 the ownership of the Archive was transferred to The Rothschild Archive Trust, an independent body of family members and advisers committed to securing the future of the collection and to developing its use by the academic community. Purpose of the Archive

The purpose of the Archive is to collect, preserve and promote the archives of the Rothschild businesses and family. The Trustees of The Rothschild Archive Trust administer the Archive as an independent charitable trust in purpose-built premises made available within the offices of the London business. Additionally, records of the French Rothschild banking business, held on deposit at the Archives Nationales du Monde du Travail, may be consulted in Roubaix, France.

The Archive collections

The records of the London firm, N M Rothschild & Sons, and papers of the French bank of M M de Rothschild Fréres form the core of the Archive collections, reflecting the activities of the other Rothschild banks through many series of correspondence and accounts that circulated between them.

Records of many of the Rothschild family's activities were maintained by the London and Paris houses, including accounts for the management of their estates and some correspondence. The family's other interests are reflected in the growing collections of personal papers that the Archive has been fortunate enough to attract.

Business records up to the date of 1945 are generally available for public consultation.

Business records of de Rothschild Frères, Paris are held on deposit by the Archives Nationales du Monde du Travail, Roubaix, France.

Other private family papers are also held by the Archive, but access restrictions may apply.
