Queen Victoria and Prince Albert both made regular use of the Rothschild courier service for their overseas correspondence, and Lionel de Rothschild (1808-1879) acted as a private financial advisor to Prince Albert. In the 1860s, Leopold de Rothschild (1845-1917) became friends with the Prince of Wales, drawn together by their horseracing interests. Friendship with members of the Royal family, through shared interests in sport and the arts, continued into the twentieth century, and another Leopold de Rothschild, 'Mr Leo' (1927-2012) was great friends with HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother from whom he received this card in 1991.
