PhD studentship in Financial History: University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow offers a 4 year fully funded PhD studentship in Financial History

Deadline for Application: 15 January 2015. The project will be supervised by Professor Catherine Schenk (Economic History) and Professor Rowland Kao (Mathematical Population Biology). The successful candidate for this studentship should have a strong applied mathematical background.

Yerusha: Archives in Europe

Yerusha is an initiative of the Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe that will become a major hub for European Jewish and Jewish-related archival material. As scholars and researchers will attest, millions of pages of documents written in dozens of languages are stored in hundreds of archives worldwide bearing witness to the variety and importance of Jewish life in Europe. Yerusha will create an online portal and database that will provide a single, searchable reference point for all such sources.

Recent Acquisitions: The Rothschild Reserves Archive

(Nathaniel) Charles Rothschild (1877-1923) was one of the early pioneers of nature conservation, and helped found The Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves (SPNR). Under Charles' supervision, the SPNR conducted the first ever national survey of wildlife sites in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The original survey papers, known as The Rothschild Reserves Archive and formerly held by The Wildlfe Trusts, have been transferred on permanent loan to The Rothschild Archive London.

Recent Acquisitions: Papers concerning orchid cultivation

A fascinating collection of papers concerning the cultivation of orchids on the Exbury estate of Mr Lionel de Rothschild (1882-1942), including receipt books, lists of plants, correspondence, catalogues and display cards from flower shows. A single file documents experiments in the 1920s to germinate orchids at the Rothschild Royal Mint Refinery in London.

Recent Acquisitions: Quill pens

Two quill pens were found in the letter copy book with entries for 25th February 1820 and 9th June 1820. (XI/148/10). They are believed to date from 1820, and still contain traces of ink on the nibs.

Recent Acquisitions: Mr Warren's Photograph Album

The Rothschild Archive was fortunate to acquire a private photograph album of Mr Warren, Head Gardener as Aston Clinton. This fascinating volume contains over 220 previously unknown private photographs of Aston Clinton, taken by Mr Warren. The album, compiled between 1896 and 1902 is a tantalising glimpse into his life over these six years.
