Treasure of the Month for December 2020

As many of us spend more time indoors during the colder months, perhaps it’s time to take up a new hobby, or rekindle an old one. Or maybe it’s time to indulge ourselves by taking some well needed R&R in front of the television. Either way, it’s a good opportunity to learn about chess, a game which was well loved by a pioneering member of the French Rothschild family - Jaqueline Piatigorsky (née de Rothschild), chess champion, tennis champion and talented sculptress.

Treasure of the Month for November 2020

On the first Thursday of November each year World Digital Preservation Day is celebrated by the global Archive community. This event brings together a wide variety of people and institutions to celebrate all things digital focusing on a different theme each year. This year’s theme ‘Digits: for Good’, is an opportunity to celebrate the positive impact digital preservation has had in a year which has seen a sudden and global reliance on digital information and infrastructure.

Treasure of the Month for October 2020

October 2020 is a month that the Archivists have eagerly been anticipating as we await the reopening of the Jewish Museum Frankfurt. After being closed for nearly six years, the museum is due to reopen on the 21st of October, after a major building extension, complete interior renovations and reinterpretation of the galleries, achieved with financial support from the city and donors including the Rothschild family. This month we look at one of the items that has been lent from the collections of The Rothschild Archive, London, an exquisite portrait of Louise, Baroness Mayer Carl von Rothschild (1820-1894) and her daughter Adele (1843-1922).

Treasure of the Month for September 2020

This month we reflect on the fortunes of the Rothschilds in what is today the nation of Italy. From his base in Naples, Carl Mayer von Rothschild was to head a strategically important branch of the family business. Two hundred and two years ago this month, on 16 September 1818, Carl married Adelheid Herz in Frankfurt.
