Collecting Policy

The Rothschild Archive was established in 1978 by Victor, 3rd Lord Rothschild. In 1999 the ownership of the Archive was transferred to The Rothschild Archive Trust, an independent body of family members and advisers committed to securing the future of the collection and to developing its use by the academic community.

1. Mission

1.1 The Rothschild Archive is an independent charity with the aims to collect and make publicly available information about the Rothschild businesses and family. The purpose of the Archive is to collect, preserve and promote the archives of the Rothschild businesses and family.

2. Scope of the collections

2.1 The records of the London firm, N M Rothschild & Sons, and papers of the French bank of M M de Rothschild Fréres form the core of the Archive collection, reflecting the activities of the other Rothschild banks through many series of correspondence and accounts that circulated between them.

2.2 Records of many of the Rothschild family's activities were maintained by the London and Paris houses, including accounts for the management of their estates and some correspondence. The family's other interests are reflected in the growing collections of personal papers that the Archive has been fortunate enough to attract.

2.3 The archive will accept paper and parchment archives, maps, plans, drawings, engravings and photographic prints, artworks, objects and audio-visual and digital media.

3. Methods of acquisition

3.1 Business papers will be transferred by arrangement with the Rothschild businesses.

3.2 Records from other sources will be acquired by gift, deposit and occasionally by purchase.
